The Phaser 6130 is a color laser printer that packs a lot of printer into a small package. At $449, the Phaser 6130 is a bargain . The Xerox 6130 is also semi-portable, weighing in at less than 40 lbs. with a footprint of about 15 inches all around . Even though it is smaller than most printers in its class , the Phaser 6130 may still a little too big to set on top of a desk.
One detail you need to remember when buying any color laser is not just the initial cost , but how much the ink or toner costs . The 6130 toner cartridges are rather expensive. You can save a lot by buying generic toner . Our testing on the 6130 using Phaser 6130 replacement toner
Setting up the 6130 is a piece of cake. Since the 6130 is so compact, you should be able to set up this device on your own. Once you lock the toner cartridges in place , all you have to do is connect the printer via USB or Ethernet , power it up, and install the driver from the included CD.
The installation of networking with the 6130 is also a snap . Finding the printer on the network and installing the Windows Vista driver took no time at all.
The Phaser 6130’s speed over a 10/100 Base-T Ethernet connection was adequate, but not impressive . It took 22 seconds to print a single Word document, about a minute to print ten pages, 2 1/2 minutes to print a 25MB Photoshop image , and 1 minute to print a four-page PDF .
One of of the idiosyncracies of the 6130 is that if the printer driver is set for color, the 6130 will always print in the 12-ppm color mode even if all you’re printing is black-and-white text. If it’s set for black and white, it will print at 16 ppm, but it will print everything, including color documents, in black and white. I’d expect most people will simply leave the printer in the default color mode instead of checking the setting each time. I ran all my tests based on that assumption.
As far as color quality , the Phaser 6130 makes no special impressions. Most reviewers gave the Phaser’s color-photo quality an average rating because colors were subdued compared to the original photo. In graphical printing areas , the Phaser 6130 scored a Good rating . The color ratings were the same whether we used the included OEM toner or in a printer where we installed compatible 6130 color toner .
The Phaser 6130 tested impressively in printing sharp, clear grayscale text . Ultimately, the Phaser 6130 can handle any text it encounters and text quality was very good. Printed text was easy to read and well formed as low as 4 points. No font had to be increased to larger than 6 points to be readable. Even a extremely cursive font with thick strokes printed legibly at 12 points. This color laser printed text clearly even with the discount Xerox Phaser 6130 black toner cartridges .
The Phaser 6130 is a smart choice for the small office looking to save money, since it provides some advanced features at an affordable price. It is priced low in its category and prints average to above average quality . Unless you are trying to print high-quality full color graphics on a large scale, the 6130 should meet most of your needs .
